Canada-US Trade War Risks Economic Consequences

Canada's relationship with the US is under scrutiny as the two nations engage in a trade war. A geopolitical analyst, Jacob Shapiro, warned that the US doesn't expect this to be a negotiation but rather an opportunity to dictate terms and impose tariffs if Canada doesn't comply. He stated that Canada has not acquiesced like Mexico did, which has led to the current stalemate.

The issue at hand is the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), now known as USMCA. The US wants changes that would give it more control over Canadian trade policies. Shapiro believes that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's approval ratings will suffer if he continues to resist US demands, which could have a significant impact on Canada's economy.

Shapiro noted that Mexico is not facing the same level of uncertainty as Canada and the US due to its reluctance to engage in retaliatory tariffs. He warned that the ongoing trade war has depressed growth on the border between the two countries and could lead to major investment decisions being put on hold until clarity emerges.
