Canada Walks Away from Trade Deal with US Amid Tariff Disputes
Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England, spoke about Canada's trade negotiations with the United States. He stated that for much of Canada's history, Canadians have been able to count on favorable trade winds, but now the climate has changed.
The US has imposed a series of tariffs on Canadian goods, which Canada considers unjustified. Carney acknowledged that America has transformed its commercial relationships and uses economic integration as a weapon.
Canada has worked intensively with the US to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal but was unable to reach an agreement. The US imposed 50% tariffs on various industries, including hockey equipment, clothing, cement, and beer, which prompted more intensive negotiations.
