Canada's AI Data Center Push Draws Record US Goods Imports
Canada's push to build more AI data centers is having a significant impact on its trade numbers, according to recent statistics from Statistics Canada. The country saw a record influx of U.S. goods in June, with imports of computers and peripherals jumping by 59%. This surge was largely driven by the demand for processors made in the U.S. for use in AI services.
The increase in computer gear imports was not reflected across all product categories, however. Nine out of eleven other categories saw declines in imports. The trade balance with the U.S. narrowed in June, but Canada still sells more to its southern neighbor than it buys.
Despite this, the country's exports also saw a boost in June, with a 13.1% increase in the second quarter. This was largely driven by energy shipments tied to Middle East tensions and exports of metallic and non-metallic mineral products, which jumped 16.5%. The weaker Canadian dollar made these totals look bigger when converted into U.S. dollars.
