Canada's Auto Recycling Industry Fights EU-Style Regulations
Canada's automotive recycling industry is already making significant contributions to the circular economy. However, policymakers are looking at the European Union's proposed End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Regulation for guidance. This regulation aims to strengthen the circular economy, increase recycled content, improve vehicle traceability, and enhance environmental protection.
The Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC), a national voice of Canada's professional automotive recycling industry, believes that policies should be designed specifically for Canadian conditions. The organization supports continuous improvement in the industry through practical, evidence-based policies that strengthen environmental outcomes while preserving the competitive marketplace.
Canada has its own national industry standard, the Canadian Auto Recyclers' Environmental Code (CAREC), which sets out practical environmental standards for the safe and responsible management of end-of-life vehicles. Compliance with CAREC is a requirement of provincial automotive recycler association membership within the ARC network.
