Canada's largest banks are at the forefront of artificial intelligence adoption in Canada. More than 30% of finance and insurance firms use AI, compared to just 1.5% of businesses in accommodation and food services.

The technology is being used to automate routine tasks, freeing up employees to focus on higher-value work. Senior bankers say they may not need to hire as many people as a result, but there is still plenty of work to be done.

CIBC's chief technology and information officer Richard Jardim said that while AI has reduced the need for certain roles, it has also created new opportunities for employees. 'We have people in technology who are business analysts or project managers,' he explained. 'Some of that can be automated now, especially project control work.'

The Bank of Canada has stated there is no evidence that AI has led to widespread job losses. However, global banks such as JPMorgan Chase and Standard Chartered have reported significant job cuts due to AI adoption.
