Canada's Big Banks See Trade Tensions as Manageable Despite Tariff Dispute
Canada's big banks have expressed optimism that the economy will remain resilient despite renewed trade tensions between Canada and the U.S.
The CEOs of major Canadian banks such as RBC, CIBC, and Scotiabank characterized the latest flare-up in tensions as 'manageable' for the domestic economy. They noted that while the average effective tariff rate remains low at approximately six percent, over 80% of exports remain duty-free.
RBC CEO Dave McKay stated that while Canada and the U.S. have yet to come to a longer-term solution, they are taking steps to mitigate the impact of tariffs on their business lending exposures.
Executives at Scotiabank also expressed optimism over Prime Minister Mark Carney's economic agenda, which includes getting national-interest projects built, diversifying Canada's trade relationships, and beefing up the country's defence capabilities.
