Canada's Business Investment Shows Signs of Life Amid Trade Uncertainty

Canada's business investment has been stagnant for years, but recent data suggests a turnaround may be underway. Investment intentions by domestic businesses have risen to their highest level since Donald Trump returned to office in 2016. Meanwhile, import volumes of machinery and equipment recently hit a decade high.

The jump in computer equipment imports is particularly encouraging, with a nearly 90% increase in June alone possibly signaling the beginning of artificial intelligence investment gains in Canada.

Jocelyn Paquet, a senior economist at National Bank of Canada, notes that businesses may be responding to the federal government's efforts to stimulate investment through infrastructure and defence projects.

While the energy sector has driven much of the recent uptick in investment, with oil prices elevated due to global supply constraints, some analysts believe there is more to the story than a temporary market fluctuation.
