Canada's Counter-Tariffs: A Tax on Ourselves for a Pipe Dream
The Canadian government has removed seafood from its list of retaliatory tariffs, citing economic harm. This move comes after Ottawa previously imposed tariffs on foreign products in response to President Donald Trump's tariffs.
Federal politicians have acknowledged that tariffs are a tax paid by domestic consumers, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford stating 'A tariff on Canada is a tax on Americans.'
Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed this sentiment, saying 'tariffs are taxes, taxes which are ultimately paid by U.S. consumers.' Despite this understanding, the Canadian government has committed $7.5 billion in support for workers and businesses affected by the tariffs.
Experts argue that enacting counter-tariffs will hurt Canadians more than it will hurt Trump. The Bank of Canada found that prices on tariffed goods rose six percent and added 0.3 percentage points to headline inflation when Canada first imposed retaliatory tariffs last year.
