Canada's Culinary Tourism Sector Booms as Travelers Seek Local Flavors
Canada's culinary tourism sector is experiencing a significant growth as travelers increasingly focus on local and Indigenous flavors during their journeys. According to Statistics Canada, tourism contributed $41.0 billion to the national GDP in 2024, equivalent to 1.8% of the country's total GDP.
The visitor economy generated $104.4 billion in inflation-adjusted revenues in 2024, with food and beverage services accounting for a significant portion of this revenue. The three largest cities, Toronto, Montréal, and Vancouver, are utilizing their diverse food scenes to drive year-round travel.
Regional destinations are also leveraging their local agricultural and culinary heritage to attract visitors. For example, Halifax and surrounding coastal towns in Atlantic Canada focus on seafood, while Calgary draws on Alberta's ranching heritage. Winnipeg offers a strong connection to Indigenous culinary traditions.
