Canada's Economic Growth Leaves Many Behind, Warns Portfolio Manager
Canada's economy is leaving many people behind, according to Martin Pelletier, a portfolio manager and author. In an interview, he discussed how strong economic growth numbers can mask a growing divide between those who hold assets and those who do not.
Pelletier pointed out that Alberta's energy sector has contributed significantly to the country's growth, but this does not mean every household is experiencing the same economy. He noted that many people are struggling with affordability due to rising costs of imported goods and daily necessities.
The result is a two-speed economy, where asset holders can continue spending on travel, services, and experiences, while others struggle to make ends meet. Pelletier warned that a lower Canadian dollar would intensify the pressure on households and urged Canadians to pay close attention to who is buying federal debt and what could happen if borrowing costs rise.
Pelletier also criticized Canada's protected markets, arguing that they limit competition and innovation. He called for more room for small and medium-sized businesses to grow instead of relying on a few large incumbents. He supports immigration but believes it should be more deliberate and tied to the country's needs.
