Canada's Economic Inequality Crisis: Ultra-Rich Skirt Responsibilities While Average Earners Pay the Price
Celebrating Labour Day in Canada, Canadians for Tax Fairness (C4TF) stands in solidarity with workers across the labour movement. The organization is grateful for the support and partnership from Canadian unions, which have been crucial to their work.
However, C4TF notes that the kind of Canada they aspire to build, a country where everyone can afford a home, put food on the table, and thrive, is rapidly being stripped away. The current economic system, as demonstrated by recent research, places the heaviest burden on people who work for a living while allowing the ultra-rich to skirt their responsibilities.
In a study released earlier this year, C4TF found that in 2022, the top 1% of earners paid only 23.6% of their income in tax, while the average earner paid 36.7%. This stark imbalance is a clear sign that the economy is not working for everyone.
C4TF emphasizes the importance of doing research and exposing these inequalities, but also acknowledges the challenges in ensuring policymakers act to correct this imbalance. To build a fairer tax system where those with the greatest means finally pay their fair share, C4TF urges Canadians to take action on Labour Day.
