Canada's Economy Roars Back with 3.3% Quarterly Growth
The Canadian economy has experienced a significant turnaround in its growth rate, according to the latest data from StatCan. In the second quarter of this year, the country's GDP expanded at an annualized rate of 3.3%, marking its fastest quarterly pace since early 2023. This surge in growth is notable, especially considering that economists had initially expected a slower pace.
The boost in economic activity was driven by various sectors, with trade playing a significant role. Exports rose by 3.6% due to a rebound in auto shipments, which had declined in the previous two quarters. Additionally, residential investment contributed to the growth, as the resale housing market experienced a surge during the spring months in provinces such as Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia.
Capital spending by businesses also showed signs of improvement, increasing by 2.3% after five consecutive quarters of decline. Investment in machinery and equipment reached a two-year high, while expenditure on computers and peripherals rose 16.7%, primarily due to the growing demand for data centre processing units.
