Canada's economy grew by 0.3% in May, exceeding expectations of a 0.2% increase, according to official data released on Friday.

The strong growth suggests that Canada's economy is likely to achieve its best annualized quarterly performance for more than three years, with an estimated 3.4% growth rate in the second quarter.

This figure surpasses the Bank of Canada's July 15 forecast of 2.5%, and marks the highest annualized quarterly increase since the first three months of 2023.

Analysts noted that the May and June figures may have been boosted by one-off factors such as the FIFA soccer World Cup, hiring for a national census, and oil facilities delaying maintenance to take advantage of higher prices.

Despite this, many experts believe that the economy has found ways to navigate trade uncertainty with the United States.

Statistics Canada reported that goods-producing industries expanded 0.6% while services-producing industries posted a 0.2% gain.
