Canada's Energy Exports Challenge Trump's Claim on US Independence

U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that his country doesn't need Canada. However, recent data reveals that nearly 4 million barrels of Canadian crude oil flow into the U.S. each day to fuel American cars, trucks, and airplanes.

The relationship between the two countries is deeply intertwined, with Canada being the second-largest U.S. trading partner after Mexico. In fact, the U.S. relies heavily on Canadian energy imports, which account for nearly 20% of total U.S. petroleum consumption, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Despite Trump's claims, even the White House acknowledges that Canada has taken roughly $50 billion a year from the U.S. over the past decade. Much of this gap reflects U.S. purchases of Canadian energy, which helps power the U.S. economy.

The trade deficit between the two countries is largely due to U.S. reliance on Canadian energy imports. Energy accounted for more than $48.3 billion of last year's goods deficit, with Canada supplying over 85% of U.S. electricity imports in 2023, according to the Canada Energy Regulator.

Canadian politicians have been debating whether to use their energy exports as leverage in trade negotiations. Some, like Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, reject using oil as a weapon, citing its potential devastation on Canada's economy.
