Canada's Energy Exports Fuel US Economy
US President Donald Trump has claimed that his country doesn't need Canada. However, nearly 4 million barrels of Canadian crude oil flow into the US every day, powering American cars, trucks, and airplanes.
This is just one aspect of a deeply intertwined economic relationship between the two countries. Canada supplies aluminum, potash to US farms, and parts for an auto industry built on both sides of the border.
Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian aluminum while acknowledging that the US badly needs it.
The contradiction highlights how much could be at stake if Trump's trade war escalates further, particularly in energy, materials, and supply chains. The US Energy Information Administration reports that Canada is the second-largest trading partner after Mexico, with over $872 billion in goods and services exchanged last year.
