Canada's Energy Sector: A Vital Contributor or a Hidden Threat?

Canada's reputation as a 'petrostate' has been criticized for years, but Margareta Dovgal argues that it's not a bad thing, rather, it's an embarrassment to not take advantage of its resources properly. The country's reliance on the energy sector is often hidden in the base budget, masking its economic value and productivity failures.

The oil and gas industry represents over 25% of Canada's exports, with $195 billion generated in 2024 alone, according to Statistics Canada. This sector employs roughly 900,000 Canadians across direct, indirect, and induced jobs, making it one of the most significant contributors to the country's economy.

However, Ottawa's dependence on energy revenues is not transparently quantified, leading to a lack of understanding about its impact on the federal treasury. The Parliamentary Budget Officer has estimated that trimming the sector's output by 4.9% would strip $20.5 billion from GDP and 40,300 jobs from the economy in a single year.

Mark Carney, the Prime Minister, has been criticized for not publicly distancing himself from Trudeau's record on energy production, which has hindered the sector's ability to secure investment. The right response to dependence is not denial or moralizing, but rather transparency and responsible resource management.
