Canada's Inflation Rate Surges Past Expectations to 3%
The Bank of Canada's inflation target has been breached after July saw a significant increase in consumer prices. The inflation rate surged to 3% in July, exceeding forecasts and pushing past the upper limit of the central bank's ideal range. This is up from 2.9% as predicted by analysts.
According to Statistics Canada, the core inflation figures held steady close to mid-range levels, suggesting that the Bank of Canada may maintain its policy rate for the remainder of the year. However, gasoline prices and travel costs saw significant hikes, with a 0.5% rise in the consumer price index from June.
Analysts had anticipated a slightly lower annual charge of 2.9% and a monthly rise of 0.4%. The increase in energy costs was primarily responsible for the surge in inflation, which economists attribute to ongoing tensions between the US and Iran.
