Canada's Labour Day Message: Building a Stronger Economy Together
On Labour Day, Prime Minister Carney celebrated the contributions of organized labour in Canada. He noted that unions have played a crucial role in strengthening the economy and making it more fair for all Canadians.
The Prime Minister highlighted some of the key benefits that unions have fought for, including better pay, safer job sites, pensions, benefits, paid leave, and even defending the weekend.
He emphasized that unions understand the importance of sharing prosperity among the many, not just building wealth but also ensuring that it is distributed fairly. The Prime Minister mentioned Canada's history as a nation of builders, citing examples such as the Canadian Pacific Railway and the St. Lawrence Seaway.
In response to global disruptions, Canada is investing in new infrastructure projects, including ports, mines, energy corridors, and affordable housing. The government has launched the Team Canada Strong initiative to recruit, train, and hire up to 100,000 skilled trades workers, with a focus on expanding union training programs nationwide.
