Canada's Labour Market Stabilizes Amid Regional Disparities
Canada's labor market has stabilized in mid-2026 after a period of post-pandemic volatility, according to the latest Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada. The survey shows that employment experienced a modest increase of 18,000 jobs in June, driven by a net gain in full-time employment.
The national unemployment rate ticked down slightly to 6.5%, marking a cautious but positive shift for the Canadian economy. However, beneath the national averages, significant disparities between thriving industries and those experiencing contractions are emerging.
Sectors tied to services and public infrastructure are seeing sustained momentum, while the manufacturing sector experienced a decline of 17,000 jobs in June, offsetting gains made earlier in the year due to tariff-related uncertainty. Other sectors like construction and agriculture also recorded notable decreases in employment during the same period.
