Canada's Municipal Green Fund Contributes $5.6B to National Economy
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Green Municipal Fund (GMF) has released its 2025-26 Annual Report, highlighting the organization's efforts to build a more sustainable and competitive Canada. The report details how GMF is helping municipalities protect their communities from climate risks, strengthen local infrastructure, and drive new investment opportunities.
With a $2.4 billion endowment funded by the Government of Canada, GMF has contributed $5.6 billion to Canada's GDP since its inception, generated $3.1 billion in wages and salaries, and created nearly 60,000 person-years of employment for Canadian workers. In the past year alone, GMF approved $229 million in funding for various projects.
One of the key highlights of the report is the success of GMF's efforts to build resilience against climate risk. Since the launch of Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation in 2024, more than 17,600 people and 160 public buildings or spaces are expected to become better prepared for climate risks.
