Canada's Services Economy Contracts Amid Trade Tensions
Canada's services economy contracted at its steepest pace in six months in August due to rising trade tensions and geopolitical instability. The S&P Global Canada Services PMI fell to 46.8, marking its lowest level since February.
The Business Activity Index dropped from 49.1 in July, with new business volumes also declining to their lowest level since January at 46.1. This was largely attributed to ongoing uncertainty and reluctance among clients to commit to new contracts.
Paul Smith, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, stated that the underlying health of Canada's service sector continued to suffer in August. He noted that confidence about the future had reached its lowest level in over a year, with rising prices seen as a threat to future business performance.
