Canada's 'Super Week' Sees Carney Pivot to Europe Amid US Tariffs
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's efforts to boost domestic economic resilience and deepen diplomatic ties with Europe have taken center stage this week. The 'Super Week' kicked off in Toronto on Monday, where Carney inaugurated the Canada Investment Summit to attract global capital for national infrastructure projects.
The summit aims to mobilize 1 trillion Canadian dollars (about 726 billion U.S. dollars) in total investments over the next five years. This aligns with Carney's strategy of expanding economic links with non-U.S. partners, including Asia and Europe.
Carney will depart for Europe on Tuesday for a three-day visit to address the European Parliament in Strasbourg and meet with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron. These high-profile engagements coincide with the formal implementation of 50 percent tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian goods.
