Canada's Tariffs Aim at American Exports
A new set of tariffs on hundreds of products is set to be imposed by Canada in September, affecting over $20 billion worth of goods. According to East Texas economist Ray Perryman, the tariffs will target around 700 American products, with some facing a 50% tariff and others a 25% tariff.
Steel, furniture, clothing, appliances, cheese, and seafood are among the products that will face a 25% tariff, while steel, furniture, and clothing will be hit with a 50% tariff. Perryman notes that these tariffs cover about $20 billion worth of goods, but this represents only a small fraction of the US economy.
Perryman said that the impact on consumers is likely to be minimal, as most products are not directly affected by the tariffs. However, some industries such as building materials and dairy farming may see an increase in costs due to the tariffs.
Political science professor Steven Galatas noted that East Texas has been caught up in trade disputes with Canada for years, including a longstanding dispute over softwood lumber products.
