Canada's Wholesale Trade Sees Surprise Growth in July
Canada's wholesale trade data for July showed an increase of 0.3% from June, exceeding expectations of a 0.5% decline. This growth is attributed to sales in three subsectors: building materials and supplies, which rose by 3.5%, led by a 10.3% increase at metal service centres; food, beverage, and tobacco sales, up 1.7%; and other sectors.
The data also revealed that when adjusted for price changes, wholesale sales volumes declined by 0.6%. This suggests that higher prices contributed to the increased value of sales, rather than a surge in demand.
The overall picture is mixed, but the stronger-than-expected headline number may provide some support for the Canadian dollar. However, experts caution against reading too much into this report alone, as it is unlikely to significantly impact expectations for the Bank of Canada's monetary policy decisions.
