Canadian Airlines Upgrade Economy Class, But is it Just Premiumization?
Canada's airlines are upgrading their economy class offerings in an effort to improve the flying experience for passengers. However, some experts say that these upgrades may not be as appealing as they seem.
Johhn Gradek, an aviation industry specialist and lecturer at McGill University, suggests that the focus is on premiumization rather than restoring pleasure to economy class. He believes that the airlines are targeting loyalty flyers and premium passengers with their upgrades.
The upgrades include features such as new seating, headrests, USB ports, screens, tray tables, and phone/tablet holders. However, Gradek points out that these upgrades do not address the most important issue: seat pitch and width.
Gradek notes that while the airlines are trying to close the technology gap with European and Asian carriers, they still have a way to go in terms of seat comfort and service. He believes that Canada's airlines need to focus on providing better seats and services rather than just adding amenities.
