Canadian Banks Dominate TSX with Record Sector Share

Canadian banks have taken over 37% of the S&P/TSX Composite Index, marking their largest sector share in eight years. This significant shift reflects investor confidence in domestic banking strength and a fundamental shift in portfolio allocations toward financial sector strength.

The Big Six banks - Toronto-Dominion Bank (TSX:TD), Royal Bank (TSX:RY), Bank of Montreal (TSX:BMO), Scotiabank (TSX:BNS), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (TSX:CM), and National Bank of Canada (TSX:NA) - have delivered consecutive quarters of double-digit earnings growth, providing a fundamental foundation for valuation expansion.

Canadian banks now trade at elevated valuations relative to US banking peers, with forward earnings multiples reaching approximately 15 times compared to roughly 12 times for US banks. This valuation premium reflects genuine differences in risk profiles and competitive positioning, as well as investor optimism that may carry elevated expectations.
