Canadian Business Week: WestJet Contract Vote and Bank Earnings Loom

WestJet flight attendants are set to wrap up their weeklong contract ratification vote on Monday, following a tentative deal reached after a one-day strike in the summer. The agreement includes an 18% wage hike over three years and a new duty period premium that compensates employees for work done on the ground.

Canada's big banks will report their third-quarter results this week, with BMO Financial Group and Scotiabank leading the way on Tuesday, followed by National Bank on Wednesday. CIBC, Royal Bank of Canada, and Toronto-Dominion Bank will report their results on Thursday.

EQB Inc., which recently acquired the PC Financial business, will release its third-quarter results after markets close on Wednesday and hold a conference call with analysts on Thursday morning. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is also set to meet with Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday to discuss future partnerships between Canada and India.

Statistics Canada will report its gross domestic product figures for June and the second quarter as a whole on Friday, with preliminary estimates suggesting growth of 0.2% for the month and a 3.4% annualized gain in the second quarter.
