Canadian Businesses Show Optimism Amid Stagnant Sales Growth
The Canadian economy is showing signs of improvement, but businesses are not optimistic about sales growth. According to Statistics Canada's Survey on Business Conditions, 72.6% of businesses are 'very' or 'somewhat' optimistic about their 12-month outlook in Q3.
This optimism is driven by the hope that conditions won't worsen, rather than actual growth. However, most companies (68.1%) expect sales to stagnate in Q3, with only 13.9% expecting a decline. The survey also found that hiring intentions are weak, with 84% of businesses expecting no change in their employee headcount.
The outlook for profits is similarly bleak, with only 10.5% of firms expecting an increase over the next 12 months. Rising costs and inflation remain major concerns for Canadian businesses. The survey found that 59.8% of companies expect cost-related obstacles, with inflation being the most commonly cited obstacle.
