Canadian Customer Outsmarts Bank Fee with Clever ATM Hack
A Canadian bank customer was faced with an $8 fee for writing a cashier's check from his US dollar account, but he found a way to avoid it. The man had $130 in his US account and wanted to get a cashier's check for that amount. However, the bank told him there was an additional $3 fee for this type of withdrawal because his account is a Canadian dollar account with access to US dollars.
Undeterred, he asked if he could use an ATM in the lobby to get cash for the check instead, which would dispense US dollars without any fees. The bank employee agreed and set aside the man's documents while he withdrew $140 from the ATM in $20 bills.
When he returned with the cash, the employee issued him a cashier's check for $130 and deposited the remaining $10 back into his account. The man was satisfied with the outcome and left the bank, heading to Canada Post next.
