Canadian Dividend Stocks for Lifelong Income: A $250,000 Investment Strategy
Amy Legate-Wolfe from The Motley Fool Canada has outlined how to invest $250,000 in Canadian dividend stocks for lifelong income. She emphasizes that a retirement portfolio must withstand not just one disappointing quarter but also two decades of recessions, inflation, interest-rate swings, and rising grocery bills.
The expected lifespan of Canadians can be quite long, with a 65-year-old woman living another 22.3 years and a man expecting to live for an additional 19.7 years. In this context, Legate-Wolfe highlights the importance of dividend growth almost as much as the starting yield.
She recommends investing $50,000 in each of five companies covering banking, pipelines, utilities, transportation, and necessity-based real estate. These stocks include Royal Bank of Canada (TSX:RY), Enbridge (TSX:ENB), Fortis (TSX:FTS), Canadian National Railway (TSX:CNR), and Choice Properties REIT (TSX:CHP.UN).
The portfolio is designed to provide a mix of current income and dividend growth potential. Legate-Wolfe suggests reinvesting every payment to allow compound growth to purchase additional shares, which can gradually increase the monthly average payout.
