Canadian Dollar Falls Amid Ongoing Trade Tensions with US
The Canadian dollar continues to fall in value due to ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the US. Despite intense negotiations, talks collapsed over the weekend after both sides traded blame for the deadlock and accused each other of unfair trade practices.
Canadian Prime Minister Carney announced that Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on a range of US products, including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. He also stated that support measures will be implemented next week to aid industries affected by the tariffs, which could last for years.
The collapse in trade talks has led to a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar, with some analysts predicting a long-term downward trend. The Bank of Canada is expected to keep interest rates steady by the end of this year before tightening policy again in 2027.
