Canadian Dollar Remains Vulnerable Despite Tariff Delay
The Canadian dollar received a brief reprieve after the US delayed its planned 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods for three days.
This postponement, announced by President Donald Trump on Tuesday, gives more time to finalize details following an agreement reportedly reached between the US and Canada.
However, Commerzbank Research noted that the modest reaction from traders suggests they still doubt either the deal will be finalized smoothly or its terms will be as supportive for Canada as hoped.
The bigger concern is durability: Trump has repeatedly criticized the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which he signed in his first term. This history makes markets wary that even a fresh agreement could be revisited, challenged, or reinterpreted.
