Canadian Dollar Slumps as Oil Prices Tumble Amid US Inflation Data
The Canadian Dollar slid in value on Friday as oil prices plummeted more than 4% and fell below $100. The US Dollar, on the other hand, initially strengthened after the release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, which showed a 0.3% monthly increase in core inflation exceeding expectations.
The annual inflation rate remained unchanged at 3.4%, but the stronger-than-expected monthly core inflation figure allowed the US Dollar to briefly strengthen. However, the Greenback struggled to retain its gains as the annual figures showed no renewed acceleration in inflationary pressures.
On the other hand, lower oil prices represented a significant headwind for the Canadian currency due to Canada's reliance on energy exports. The Loonie's weakness combined with the US Dollar's initially positive reaction to the inflation data allowed USD/CAD to extend its advance on Friday.
