Canadian Economy Surges with 0.8% Q2 Growth
Canada's economy showed significant signs of improvement in the second quarter, with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rising 0.8% from the previous quarter. This growth marks a notable acceleration from the 0.1% expansion recorded in Q1, which was revised upward from the initial reported 0%. On an annualized basis, Canadian GDP increased by 3.3%, outpacing the previous quarter's growth of 0.3% and meeting market expectations.
The second-quarter growth was driven by strong exports, household consumption, and business investment. Exports surged 3.6%, their largest quarterly increase since Q1 2023, while household spending remained resilient with a 0.8% gain during the quarter. Business investment also strengthened as companies increased spending on machinery, equipment, and engineering structures.
The stronger economic performance could have a supportive effect on the Canadian Dollar by alleviating concerns about an extended slowdown. However, the impact on monetary policy expectations may depend on whether this growth is sustained and how inflation develops.
