Canadian Five-Year Bond Yield Hits Yearly High, Pressures Fixed Mortgage Rates
The five-year bond yield in Canada has reached its highest level in a year, according to recent data. This move has put additional pressure on fixed mortgage rates as it is a key benchmark for lenders.
The yield has risen nearly 20 basis points since August 25 and around seven basis points over the past week. From its 2026 low of 2.67% on February 27, it has increased roughly 78 basis points.
This upward trend accelerated this week due to concerns about inflation risks highlighted by the Bank of Canada and stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data that pushed Treasury yields higher. However, a weaker jobs report in Canada provided some relief, causing the yield to pull back to around 3.41% by early afternoon on Friday.
