Canadian Inflation Surges Above Expectations on Rising Gas Prices
Canada's headline inflation rate accelerated to 3% in July, exceeding expectations of 2.9%. The main driver behind this increase was a significant rise in gasoline prices due to higher Middle East tensions. However, excluding energy costs, the core inflation remained subdued at around 1.95%, still below the Bank of Canada's target of 2%. Other areas of inflation pressure came from travel and airfare increases amid World Cup demand.
Despite soft core inflation, other economic data suggested a relatively firm labor market and growth in Q2, with an unemployment rate of 6.4% and GDP growth of 3.4% annualized. This could lead to a more hawkish monetary policy stance by the Bank of Canada compared to the US Federal Reserve.
