Canadian Labor Market Shows Signs of Improvement with Strong Job Gains

The Canadian labor market has shown signs of improvement after a recent slowdown. Statistics Canada reported that employment jumped by 75,000 in July, exceeding economists' expectations.

This marked the third consecutive month of job gains, with full-time positions accounting for an additional 193,000 jobs since April. The unemployment rate fell to 6.4%, its lowest level in two years.

The improvement spans a broad range of sectors, including wholesale and retail trade, finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing, professional, scientific and technical services, and construction. This diversity is significant for investors, as an economic rebound supported by multiple industries is more convincing than one dependent on a single sector.

The average hourly wage increased 2.8% from a year earlier in July, slowing from 3.3% in June. The Canadian dollar strengthened by around 0.6% against the US dollar following the release of the jobs report.
