Canadian Labor Market Stalls with Loss of 41,700 Jobs
Canada's labor market stalled in August, shedding 41,700 jobs and bucking economist expectations for a gain of 15,000 positions. The unemployment rate remained steady at 6.4%.
The manufacturing industry was a surprise pocket of strength, adding 22,000 jobs despite being hit hard by US tariffs. However, the public sector experienced its third straight month of losses, shedding 20,000 positions.
TD Bank senior economist Andrew Hencic cautioned that one month's data should not define the labor market, emphasizing the importance of steady unemployment rates over headline job losses.
The trade war with the US continues to cloud the economic outlook, with the Bank of Canada signaling concerns about lingering risks to inflation tied to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
