Canadian Leaders Unite for Sustainable Prosperity
Dorothy Melville, a PDSB educator and Vice President of Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation District 19, recently participated in the 2026 Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference. The conference brought together approximately 200 emerging leaders from across Canada to foster collaboration and leadership skills.
The nine-day study tour took Dorothy and her group through British Columbia, covering over 2,750 kilometers and involving 90 meetings with various communities, businesses, and social organizations. This experience allowed Dorothy to think differently about collaboration, as she was exposed to diverse perspectives and ways of approaching problems.
One of the most meaningful visits during the tour was to Lytton, B.C., where Dorothy witnessed the construction of an Indigenous childcare centre. The centre aimed to connect children with their culture, the land, and the surrounding Stein Valley Nlaka'pamux Heritage Park. This experience made Dorothy consider what a genuine investment in children and youth can look like.
The tour also emphasized the importance of collaboration during challenging times, as each community expressed pride in giving young people opportunities to connect with their histories and roots. The group's closing plenary presentation reflected on sustainable prosperity, using the life cycle of salmon as a metaphor for Canada’s economy and shared responsibility.
