Canadian Markets Rise Amid Global Market Volatility
Global stocks trended upward as investors weighed various market factors, including lingering stress in global bond markets and diplomatic tensions in the Gulf region. This comes after North American markets closed lower yesterday.
Christian Hantel, head of global corporate bonds at Vontobel, noted that the initial Treasury buyback move was unexpected but questioned its long-term impact. He suggested that the market may be testing whether it's ready to increase from the announced US$4 billion.
Oil prices steadied and were on track for a second consecutive weekly gain due to the United States' threat to impose 'the toughest sanctions in history.' Brent crude futures rose 0.44% to US$94.19 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures advanced 0.32% to US$87.11.
The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart, reaching a day range of 72.50-72.83 US cents and increasing about 2.53% over the past month.
