Canadian Tourism to US Plummets Amid Trade War and Trump Insults

Canadian tourism to the US has plummeted since President Trump's return to office in 2025, with Canadians making 25% fewer return border crossings and spending about $2.4 billion (CA$3.3 billion) less on travel to the U.S.

The decline coincided with a weaker Canadian dollar that made traveling to the US more expensive, rising airfares, and hotels prices.

US tourism officials are trying to woo Canadians back with promotions such as New York state's 'NY Loves Canada' campaign, offering discounts at hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

However, some Canadians, like Vancouver resident Josh Loewen, say they won't visit the US until there's a new president, citing Trump's trade policies and personal insults towards Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as reasons for their boycott.

'It's such a big ask right now,' Loewen said. 'It's just a wasted effort.'
