Canadians' Economic Pessimism Fades Amid Rising Confidence
Canadians' economic pessimism is on the decline as concerns about weak growth and higher energy prices fade, according to a recent poll.
The Bloomberg Nanos Canadian Confidence Index rose to 52.55 in the week ended July 24, up from its recent low of 46.31 at the beginning of April.
This increase indicates that more Canadians are viewing their economic situation positively, with a reading above 50 indicating net positive views.
Furthermore, the proportion of respondents who believe their finances are worse off than a year ago fell to 34.4%, mirroring the decline in those expecting economic conditions to worsen over the next six months, which also reached its lowest level since November 2024 at 34.4%.
The data from this poll supports some of the more optimistic views presented by the Bank of Canada earlier this month, when policymakers held borrowing costs steady for a sixth consecutive meeting.
