Canadians Need Encouragement, Not Just Strategy
Canada is facing a new round of tariffs from the US, with President Donald Trump's latest executive actions setting an effective tariff rate of around 12 per cent. This has been estimated to impose an additional cost of $900 to $1,000 on the average American household.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and his government have been criticized for not taking a strong enough stance against these tariffs, with some calling for dollar-for-dollar retaliation. However, John McKay, former Liberal MP for Scarborough, Guildwood, Ont., suggests that this approach may be misguided.
McKay argues that Canadians are already making a difference by changing their purchasing habits and avoiding American goods. Reports suggest that Canadian travel to the US has fallen dramatically, with some popular destinations seeing declines of 50-65 per cent in Canadian visitors. Retailers are also reporting declining demand for US-sourced products.
McKay believes that the prime minister should be highlighting these efforts and explaining how they're impacting the American economy. By doing so, he says Canadians will feel more confident in their ability to make a difference and will be more likely to continue supporting Canadian goods and services.
