Canadians Prioritize Income Over Wealth in Shifting Retirement Landscape
Canadian investors are shifting their focus from accumulating wealth to securing reliable income in retirement. A recent survey found that only 58% of unretired Canadians have saved for retirement at any point, and only 46% had saved during the previous year.
The importance of predictable lifetime income is highlighted by the fact that nearly nine in ten Canadians would accept a 9% salary contribution with an employer match in exchange for a defined-benefit pension. This highlights the perceived value of guaranteed income in retirement planning.
The traditional retirement model focuses on accumulated wealth, but investors are increasingly recognizing that the size of their portfolio matters less than the sustainable income it can provide. A $1.5 million portfolio may sound impressive, but if an investor has no pension and requires $90,000 annually, the portfolio faces a very different challenge.
With the Canadian economy facing inflation, housing costs, and healthcare uncertainty, investors are reevaluating their retirement strategies to prioritize guaranteed income, investment growth, liquidity, tax efficiency, and housing flexibility. Defined-benefit pensions are gaining popularity as they effectively transfer several risks away from the individual, providing a predetermined retirement benefit according to the plan's formula.
