Canadians Seek Fairness, Not Equality: A Misunderstood Socialist Revival
A recent Abacus Data survey suggests that Canadians are interested in socialism, particularly among younger demographics. However, this interest stems more from a desire for fairness than a genuine embrace of socialist principles.
According to the survey, 36% of Canadians have a positive impression of democratic socialism, and 29% feel positively about socialism. Among Canadians aged 18-29, these figures climb to 43% and 39%, respectively. A striking 26% of this cohort even views communism positively.
However, when asked about their feelings towards the free-market economy, a majority of Canadians (51%) have a positive impression. This is higher than the percentage who view socialism positively, and also higher than those who feel positively about capitalism (33%).
The survey suggests that Canadians are more concerned with perceived unfairness in the market rather than inequality itself. In fact, research has shown that people don't actually mind inequality; they object to unfairness.
