Canadians Stand Firm Against US Trade Pressure, but Support Varies by Age
A new poll conducted by Ipsos for Global News has found strong support among Canadians for their government's decision to stand firm in trade negotiations with the US and impose retaliatory tariffs.
The poll, released on Saturday, showed that 63% of Canadians surveyed feel Canada was right to resist American pressure, even if it meant higher costs and job losses. A staggering 73% also supported Ottawa's 'dollar for dollar' counter-tariffs on $28 billion worth of US goods.
However, support for the government's stance varies significantly by age group. While 80% of elderly boomers backed both positions, only 48% of Gen Z adults and 57% of Millennials shared this view.
Darrell Bricker, chairman of Ipsos Canada, attributed the disparity to economic realities, stating that 'those who are living in what we like to call 'the endurance economy' are just getting by from day to day, and they're enduring economic life right now.'
