Canary Islands Staying on Euro Banknotes Despite Initial Omission

The European Central Bank (ECB) has confirmed that the Canary Islands and other European islands and overseas territories will remain on the new euro banknotes.

This decision comes after the ECB presented pre-selected designs for the new euro banknotes last Thursday, July 23. The proposed designs feature two themes: 'European culture' and 'rivers and birds.' However, in those initial sketches, the Canary Islands and other European islands were not included.

The ECB has clarified that the guidelines provided to designers were general and did not specify how overseas territories or European islands should be represented. Nevertheless, these regions will be incorporated during the next phase of the redesign once the final proposal is selected and adapted for conversion into actual banknotes.
