Canary Islands to Remain on New Euro Banknotes Despite Initial Omission

The European Central Bank (ECB) has made it clear that the Canary Islands and other European islands and overseas territories will continue to be featured on new euro banknotes. The ECB presented pre-selected designs for the notes last Thursday, July 23, and launched a survey to gather opinions from Europeans until September 21.

The proposed designs were inspired by two themes: 'European culture' and 'rivers and birds.' However, in those initial sketches, the Canary Islands and other territories had been absent. The ECB attributed this oversight to general guidelines provided to designers, which did not specify how overseas territories or European islands should be represented.

Despite their absence from the initial designs, the ECB clarified that these territories will be incorporated during the next phase of the redesign process. This means that the Canary Islands will indeed continue to be represented on the new euro banknotes.
