Canterbury Transport Network Key to Economic Success

Canterbury's economic success relies heavily on its transport network, according to Environment Canterbury Chair Dr Deon Swiggs. The region is one of New Zealand's key economic drivers, generating $55.6 billion in GDP and producing over $11.7 billion in goods exports annually.

The report 'The South Island's Contribution to the New Zealand Economy' highlights Canterbury's critical role in supporting national prosperity. Its strong agricultural, manufacturing, freight, tourism, and export sectors contribute significantly to growth across the country.

However, the region only receives 5.5% of National Land Transport Fund expenditure, despite accounting for 13.1% of New Zealand's population and 15.3% of the country's goods exports.

Chair Swiggs is calling for a more proportionate and evidence-based approach to transport investment, prioritizing maintenance and resilience and investing based on freight demand.
