Capital-Spending Boom vs Consumer Slump: America's Economy in Flux

The Federal Reserve's Beige Book has revealed an interesting trend in America's economy. While consumer spending is dipping, manufacturing is booming.

Economist Hank Lewis attributes this gap to businesses selling more to other companies and governments, rather than consumers. 'They can still do well while consumers are doing poorly,' he said.

Lewis notes that investments in industries like AI are driving production levels up, but consumer spending needs to improve for a sustainable economy. Some industries are spending more on AI to stay ahead of the curve when the economy improves.

The report shows contained industrial inflation and diminishing consumer inflationary pressure. With strong labor demand and stable gas prices, capitalism may be playing out as it should, just taking time to reach its full potential.
